Product Introduction

The 140CPS11420 is the workhorse AC power supply for the Modicon Quantum rack. It takes 115 or 230 VAC and produces a single 5.1 V DC rail that feeds the backplane — CPU, I/O modules, and communication cards. It does not power field devices; 24 V sensors and actuators must be supplied separately.

Its defining feature is summable operation. Two 140CPS11420 units on the same backplane can share the load, giving up to 20 A at 60 °C instead of the 11 A available from a single unit. That makes it suitable for heavily populated racks with multiple analog, communication and processor modules. The built-in NC alarm relay is the standard way to signal a mains loss or internal fault to an external annunciator or upstream controller.

QA/QC Transparency SOP

  1. Intake & Origin Verification — Confirm 140CPS11420 marking, check terminal block for burnt contacts, inspect backplane fingers for corrosion or damage.
  2. Live Functional Testing — Install in a known-good Quantum rack; apply rated AC input; verify green PWR OK LED and stable 5.1 V DC bus.
  3. Electrical Parameter Tests — Measure output voltage under no-load and incremental load; verify regulation within spec. Check alarm relay state during power-up and power-down.
  4. Diagnostic Tests — Drop AC input below the dropout threshold (~70 VAC for 115 V setting, ~140 VAC for 230 V setting) and confirm the NC relay opens.
  5. Final QC & Packaging — Record output voltage, load behavior, relay state, and LED status; pack in anti-static bag with desiccant and test report.

Field Engineer Gotchas

  • Summable vs. standalone current: 11 A is the standalone limit. You only get 20 A when two compatible summable supplies share the same backplane. Do not assume a single unit delivers 20 A.
  • 115 VAC jumper: Older documentation references a jumper/strap for 115 VAC operation. Verify the hardware revision and wiring diagram before energizing.
  • Alarm relay is NC: The power-fault relay is normally closed when healthy. Wiring it as NO will give the opposite alarm behavior.
  • No minimum load required: The module does not need a minimum load to regulate, which simplifies bench testing.
  • Ride-through is limited: The unit tolerates up to a half-cycle mains interruption at full load. Longer sags will drop the 5.1 V rail and trip the alarm relay.
  • Do not mix incompatible supplies: A 140CPS11410 and 140CPS11420 can share a backplane, but the combined current is limited to the lower-rated unit’s capacity.

Application Scenarios

  • Main AC supply for a Quantum local rack with CPU, communication modules, and mixed I/O.
  • Dual-summable configuration for high-density racks approaching the 11 A single-supply limit.
  • Brownfield retrofits where 115 VAC or 230 VAC mains are already present in the cabinet.
  • Alarm integration via the NC relay into a plant annunciator, DCS DI point, or safety panel.

FAQ

Is 140CPS11420 discontinued?
No. It remains listed as an active Modicon Quantum product on Schneider Electric’s official site.

Can I use it with 24 VDC input?
No. 140CPS11420 is AC input only. For 24 VDC backplane supply, use 140CPS21400 or 140CPS22400.

What is the difference between 140CPS11420 and 140CPS12420?
11420 is standalone/summable. 12420 is the redundant variant — two supplies in a hot-standby arrangement rather than current-sharing on one backplane.

Does it power field instruments?
No. It only supplies the 5.1 V DC backplane. Field devices need a separate 24 VDC supply.

What software configures it?
None. It is a hardware power supply with no firmware or configuration parameters. The alarm relay state and PWR OK LED are the only diagnostics.

What replaces it if needed?
Stay within the Modicon Quantum 140CPS11xxx / 140CPS12xxx AC family. Do not substitute EcoStruxure Control Expert-era or M340/X80 power supplies — they are mechanically and electrically incompatible.
