Product Introduction
In a Modicon Quantum rack, the 140ACO13000 is the card that turns a PID output word into a real current signal. The CPU calculates the control value; the 140ACO13000 drives it out to the field as 4-20 mA. If this module fails, the operator station may still show a healthy output value while the control valve sits dead in place.
This is an 8-channel, high-density analog current output module. It supports 4-20 mA, 0-20 mA, and 0-25 mA ranges, with configurable count scaling. The channels share a common return and are not isolated from each other, though there is channel-to-bus isolation. It requires an external loop supply of 6-30 VDC and draws 550 mA from the Quantum backplane. Configuration is done in Unity Pro or Concept, and the module supports hot-swap replacement in a powered Quantum rack.
QA/QC Transparency SOP
- Intake & Label Verification — Confirm the label reads “140ACO13000.” Inspect the front connector, terminal block, backplane connector, and LED window for corrosion, burnt pins, or mechanical damage.
- Visual Inspection — Check terminal screws, fuse compartment (if accessible), and the removable front door for signs of overheating or moisture ingress.
- Backplane & Power Rail Check — Verify the backplane connector pins are straight and undamaged. Check for shorted or open traces on the module power input.
- Channel Output Test — If a Quantum test rack is available, configure the module in Unity Pro and verify each channel outputs the correct current against a reference meter across multiple setpoints (0%, 50%, 100%). If no test rack is available, document the limitation.
- Final QC & Anti-Static Packaging — Seal in an ESD bag with model, serial/asset tag, test status, and date. Include a test report when live testing is performed.
Field Engineer Gotchas
- Channels are not isolated from each other. All eight channels share a common return. If you wire two loops with different ground references, you can create ground loops that cause erratic output or damage. Solution: use a single common loop supply and verify grounding.
- External loop supply is mandatory. The 140ACO13000 does not generate its own loop power. It requires 6-30 VDC from an external supply. If the loop supply is missing or undersized, the output will read zero regardless of the CPU value.
- Wiring the RETURN terminal incorrectly. All terminals marked “RETURN” are the common return. Miswiring the RETURN as a signal terminal will cause channel faults and incorrect current output. Refer to the Schneider wiring diagram before connecting.
- 140ACO13000 vs 140ACO02000 is not a drop-in swap. The 140ACO02000 is a 4-channel, channel-isolated analog output module with different terminal assignments and address requirements. Replacing one with the other requires rewiring and reconfiguration.
- Resolution and scaling mismatch. The default 4-20 mA range uses 0-4095 counts (12-bit). If your control logic assumes 0-16000 or 0-20000 counts, the output will be scaled incorrectly. Always verify the count range in the Unity Pro configuration.
- Open-circuit fault detection. The module can detect open circuits on 4-20 mA loops. If a channel LED turns red, check the field wiring and loop supply before replacing the module.

Application Scenarios
- Process control loops. Chemical, oil and gas, and power plants use the 140ACO13000 to drive control valves, I/P converters, and variable speed drive references in Modicon Quantum-based DCS/PLC systems.
- Legacy Quantum maintenance. Facilities running older Modicon Quantum racks keep 140ACO13000 modules in stock because lead times for replacements can be long and rewiring to a new platform is costly.
- Batch and continuous processes. The 8-channel density makes it suitable for applications requiring multiple analog outputs in a single slot, such as multi-zone temperature control or multi-valve batching systems.
- Migration holdover. During migration to Modicon M580 or EcoStruxure platforms, teams keep legacy Quantum I/O modules to maintain existing wiring and avoid full panel rework.
FAQ
What is the 140ACO13000?
It is a Schneider Electric Modicon Quantum 8-channel analog current output module, used to drive 4-20 mA, 0-20 mA, and 0-25 mA field devices.
How many channels does it have?
Eight analog current output channels, high-density, non-isolated from each other.
What output ranges does it support?
4-20 mA, 0-20 mA, and 0-25 mA, with configurable count scaling (0-4095 default for 4-20 mA, or 0-16000 / 0-20000 / 0-25000 depending on range).
Does it provide loop power?
No. It requires an external 6-30 VDC loop supply. The module itself draws 550 mA from the Quantum backplane.
Is it isolated?
Channels are not isolated from each other (shared common return). There is channel-to-bus isolation rated at 1780 VAC for 1 minute.
Can it be hot-swapped?
Yes, Modicon Quantum I/O modules support hot-swap replacement in a powered rack.
Is this still in production?
It is a legacy Modicon Quantum module. Available stock is typically surplus, refurbished, or new-old-stock. Verify condition and test status before purchase.
